In a recent interview with the Dutch National Federation of Data Protection Officers (NGFG), Paul Collier, Data Protection Officer with The DPO Centre, discussed the privacy solution for a pilot project involving AI technology and bodycams.
The project aimed to make access control easier for security staff in nightclubs and bars, by using bodycams integrated with Live Facial Recognition (LFR) technology. The bodycams captured real-time footage of individuals entering the premises, helping to identify those who should not be present. Security guards currently rely on memory, which can be difficult when dealing with large groups and intoxicated individuals.
In his role as DPO, Paul ensured the AI technology and bodycam application complied with the General Data Protection RegulationRegulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data (General Data Protection Regulation). (GDPR) and upheld individuals’ privacy rights. Completing a Data Protection Impact AssessmentA formal documented assessment which allows decision-makers to identify, manage and mitigate any data protection risks associated with a project. (DPIA) and other important privacy documents were essential for identifying the risks and implementing an effective solution.
As AI technologies continue to evolve, it is crucial for organisations to understand the data protection and privacy implications of using them.
