Outsourced AI Officer Services

Why do organisations need AI governance and leadership?

AI deployment is moving fast, with global investment in artificial intelligence expected to reach trillions in the coming years.

Organisations are already expanding the use of generative and agentic AI to drive automation, improve efficiency, and gain competitive advantage. But as adoption increases so does risk, often without clear ownership or control.

At the same time, AI governance expectations are rising. Laws such as the EU AI Act are placing greater responsibility on organisations to show oversight and control, especially where AI is used to make decisions.

The challenge is having clarity on these key questions:

  • Who is accountable for AI risk in your organisation?
  • Can you demonstrate how AI-driven decisions are assessed and controlled?
  • Are you ready to meet regulatory expectations?
  • Is AI use managed consistently across departments?

For many organisations, these questions are not easy to answer. You may be considering whether you need a Chief AI Officer (CAIO) or a more flexible, fractional approach to AI leadership.

Outsourced AI Officer Services

A PRACTICAL SOLUTION TO AI GOVERNANCE AND LEADERSHIP

Our Outsourced AI Officer service provides practical AI governance, providing clear ownership, governance and oversight of how AI is used across your organisation.

Delivered on a fractional basis, you gain access to senior AI leadership without the cost or commitment of a full-time Chief AI Officer (CAIO). Support is typically provided from one to several days per month, depending on your needs, scale, and stage of AI adoption.

We work alongside your team to:

  • Identify and map where AI systems are used across the organisation
  • Develop AI policies and governance standards
  • Manage AI risk, including bias, accuracy, and misuse
  • Ensure clear accountability and oversight are in place
  • Prepare for emerging regulation, including the EU AI Act

Benefits of coordinated AI and DPO services

AI governance and data protection compliance intersect where AI systems use personal data. However, they require different expertise and should not sit with the same person.

The AI lead is responsible for how AI systems are governed, including risk and accountability. The Data Protection Officer is responsible for how personal data is handled and safeguarded in line with regulatory requirements.

Without coordination between these roles, gaps or duplications can arise, particularly where AI relies on personal data.

Appointing both an outsourced AI Officer and an outsourced DPO from The DPO Centre ensures oversight is aligned, with clear accountability and consistent governance across both areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between a Chief AI Officer and an outsourced AI Officer?

A Chief AI Officer is a permanent executive role. An outsourced AI Officer provides equivalent governance leadership on a flexible, fractional basis, offering scalability and cost control.

What does an AI Officer do?

An AI Officer provides senior-level, strategic leadership and guidance to design, maintain, and oversee AI governance frameworks. They will align AI adoption with risk and anticipate future regulation requirements.

Is an AI Officer mandatory under the EU AI Act?

The EU AI Act does not mandate a specific job title. However, it requires clear accountability, governance structures, and oversight for certain AI systems, especially those that are ‘high risk’ or count as General Purpose Models within the meaning of the Act. An AI Officer provides structured leadership to meet these obligations, and organisations may struggle to comply without a named individual in this role.

How does an AI Officer differ from a DPO?

A Data Protection Officer (DPO) manages data protection compliance under the GDPR and other relevant global privacy legislation. The role has a statutory definition under the GDPR and is mandatory in certain circumstances. An AI Officer oversees broader AI governance, including model risk bias, transparency, accountability, and regulatory alignment beyond data protection, including for AI systems that don’t process personal data, but may nonetheless be of high impact either for your organisation, members of the general public, or society at large.

Can I engage The DPO Centre's AI Governance Services separately from Data Protection Services?

Yes. Each service is delivered by separate resources with unique skills and experience. Our AI Officer Service works alongside your existing governance structure. This typically includes collaboration with your DPO, whether that is an outsourced DPO from The DPO Centre, an in-house DPO, or another internal lead. The focus is coordinated oversight, ensuring AI initiatives align with your broader risk, compliance, and operational objectives. If you are looking for targeted guidance on AI deployment, AI governance, or regulatory compliance as a standalone requirement, we welcome the opportunity to discuss how we can support you.
