2nd reading of DPDI Bill in House of Lords
On 19 December 2023 the Data Protection and Digital Information (DPDI) Bill was debated at the second reading stage in the House of Lords. Viscount Camrose opened the debate, stating that the Bill will benefit the economy by £10.6 billion over 10 years. Lord Camal said, ‘When I look at the Bill at this stage, I think there are bits to be welcomed, bits that need to be clarified, and bits that raise concern.’ The ensuing discussions highlighted the Members’ various concerns, including the upholding of privacy standards, AI and safeguarding, and adequacy with the EU.
Lord Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham quoted Rob Masson, CEO of The DPO Centre and called attention to the way in which the UK seems to be going in the opposite direction to the rest of the globe by lowering data protection standards. Read further details and an overview of the DPDI Bill
EU agreement reached over ban on AI biometric surveillance
On 8 December 2023 and after 3 days of negotiations, the European Parliament and EU member states reached an agreement on the ban of real-time AI-driven biometric data. The ban will apply to police and national security bodies in public and private spaces, with exceptions for serious crimes or terrorist threats. But even in these cases, authorisation must be obtained within 24 hours. The operational details of the agreement were revealed on 11 December 2023, with the final text due to be published once the text has been ‘cleaned up’. The legislation aims to implement safeguards against what has been termed ‘predictive policing’. Each EU country must be compliant with these AI prohibitions within 6 months of the laws going on the EU statute books or in the EU’s gazette of record.
